1. Basic Definition and Function

Thread protectors for pipe fittings, also known as thread guards, are supporting protective devices fitted on the ends of seamless pipes. Their core function is to prevent the pipe-end threads from impact damage during handling, transportation and operation, so as to ensure the sealing performance and structural strength of subsequent connections. Relevant products must comply with industry standards such as API 5CT.

2. Protector Matching for Different Thread Types

  1. EU (External Upset Tubing) Thread Protector
    Designed for 8 TPI, 1:16 taper 60° thread profile of external upset tubing. Most adopt steel-plastic structure (outer steel shell with inner plastic lining), fit the special outer diameter of the upset section, and feature stronger impact resistance.
  2. NU (Non-Upset Tubing) Thread Protector
    Suitable for 10 TPI, 1:16 taper 60° thread profile of non-upset tubing, covering all NU specifications from 1.050" to 4.5". Both all-plastic and steel-plastic types are applicable with high universality.
  3. BTC (Buttress Casing) Thread Protector
    Matches API standard buttress casing threads, fits all casing grades including J55 and P110. It can protect threads under working conditions with large axial tension, available in all-steel and steel-plastic structures, covering all BTC specifications from 2 3/8" to 20".
  4. STC (Short Round Casing) Thread Protector
    Fits API short round casing threads with compact structure, mostly used for casing thread protection in conventional shallow well conditions. The all-plastic type has high cost performance and adapts to the thread size of standard short round connections.
  5. LTC (Long Round Casing) Thread Protector
    Suitable for API long round casing threads. Compared with STC protectors, it has longer thread engagement length for more complete protection coverage, and adapts to the large-pitch structure of long round connections to avoid deformation of thread profile.

3. Premium Connection Thread Protector

Customized for non-API standard special threads. It needs to be processed to match the exclusive thread profile, taper and sealing surface size of corresponding premium connections. Most are made of high-strength modified plastic or customized steel-plastic composite structure, and some high-end models are equipped with magnetic or quick-release designs to meet the high-precision thread protection requirements under special well conditions.
